La Ruta Maya or the Maya Route is a tourist route connecting important archeological Maya sites and natural reserves. La Ruta Maya runs through the southern part of Mexico (the states Yucatan, Chiapas, Campeche and Quintana Roo), Guatemala, Belize and a small part of Honduras. The area encompasses thousands of archeological sites of all sizes, an enormous area of jungle, forest and swamps and many species of wild animals. The most famous sites of La Ruta Maya are the artistic sites Chichen Itza and Uxmal, the Caribbean site Tulum, the impressive Palenque, the mysterious Tikal and the ruins in Copa, Honduras. The Maya Route was once the centre of the Maya culture. This culture arose about 4000 years ago and was at that time one of the greatest cultures of which little is still known today.
Nowadays approximately 6 million Maya's are live in the original area. The plans for La Ruta Maya were first published in the National Geographic of October 1989. To make the international project succeed, much attention has been given to the tourist character of La Ruta Maya. Many of the sites can therefore easily be reached by public transport and there are plenty of places to stay along the route.
